Tell us about the Underwriting Department

The underwriting team support NHBC to set underwriting policy and our risk appetite, ensuring appropriate risk reviews are carried out prior to property registration.

The team plays a leading role in acquiring new major project business, which are essentially high-rise tower blocks, managing NHBC’s road and sewer bond exposure and our warranty and insurance product suite. The team is also responsible for arranging reinsurance.

I work in underwritings product management team as a project manager. The team manage the warranty and insurance products NHBC is known for with Buildmark being our flagship product.

We are responsible for product design, new products, policy wording and all supporting documentation and the annual pricing.

The projects I'm currently working on are initiatives for shared owners and show homes.

Tell us about your career journey at NHBC

I started at NHBC in 2013 in customer services a couple of years after graduating.

It wasn't my first job after uni, but it marked a change in career direction. After various roles within customer services, I moved over to product management in the underwriting department in 2021 as an Assistant Product Manager.

I was promoted to the project manager role for the product team in July last year.

What do you enjoy most about working at NHBC?

What I enjoy most is that I love my job and I get to work with a great team of people. I also think it's brilliant that NHBC is willing to support and invest in its staff’s development and training.

There is opportunity at NHBC if you are willing and proactive.

Since joining the Underwriting Apartment, I have completed my insurance exams with the Chartered Institute of Insurance and I'm now about to embark on a project management course to support me in my current role.

What I like most about my role is the variety in my day-to-day tasks, and the satisfaction of seeing projects through from kick-off to completion.
