Tom talks about completing his NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Construction Site Supervision and winning a Pride in the Job 2022 Quality Award.
Read moreJoe has been working in the construction industry for about twelve years and has progressed through multiple NVQ qualifications to achieve his latest, a Level 7 in Construction Senior Management.
Having joined the construction industry at 18 years old Joe has never looked back. He began his career as a dry liner and plasterer, then became a rendering supervisor. He was later approached by Barratt Homes to be an Assistant Site Manager and promoted to a Site Manager role 2 years ago.
Why choose an NVQ?
NHBC offer NVQs from Levels 3 to 7 in subjects focussed on construction site management, site inspection and contract operations. We take great care to ensure that we match candidates with the right level of NVQ to set them up for success.
Joe explained:
"I’d been in construction for a few years and had plenty of experience on site so I felt quietly confident on the technical side of things. Where I found myself learning new skills and having to really stretch myself more to achieve at Level 7 was around people management and managerial thinking. I sometimes found this a bit challenging but had a lot of support from my tutor who helped me consider what I was currently doing, how I could move that forward and was always available if I needed to ask questions."
Looking ahead:
Joe has now achieved his NVQ Level 7, the equivalent of a master’s degree, and looks forward to continuing in a rewarding career in construction.
Charlotte Andrews, Learning and Development Project Manager at Barratt Homes said ‘At Barratt Homes we’re delighted to be able to help people advance and build fulfilling careers with us. Joe has made the most of the opportunities offered to him and worked hard to increase his knowledge and skills progressively through NVQ qualifications with NHBC. He’s a great example of what you can achieve in the house-building industry and a role model to anyone who wants to start in a trade and see where it can take them during their career.’
NHBC is committed to raising standards in house building by championing high-quality homes and are proud to offer qualifications that aid individual career progression and meet the needs of house builders.
Having recently completed my Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management (Residential Development) I can honestly say that it has benefited my role. The course was well explained from start to finish and communication was clear throughout.
The Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Site Management (Residential Development) covers all aspects of site management and is perfect for people working in an assistant site manger role like me. My assessor worked around my busy schedule and offered good quality feedback and guidance.
The support from my assessor was second to none and he was always available when needed. Without a doubt he made the whole thing a lot less complicated and I think that’s the reason I completed it on the time frame.
It was a good collaboration with my assessor and I want to say thanks for his support throughout this journey. Without a doubt, my assessor has added a lot to my construction knowledge - from building standards to legal responsibilities on health and safety for individuals and site conditions.
I found the NVQ particularly tough with getting the knowledge out of my head onto paper but with the help of my assessor once I started the course I completed it in 3 months.
I thoroughly enjoyed the course from start to finish and the help and guidance from the assessors is excellent.
