Taking her first foray into construction at just 19 years old, and with her family also working in the industry, Laura knew from an early age that she wanted to pursue a career in the house-building industry; it was just a case of finding the right role.

Background:

Having always worked in the property industry, Laura was fortunate to discover her passion for home building and renovation early on. Laura started by studying for a Diploma in Surveying Practice through the College of Estate Management at Reading University. She then began working as a Trainee Surveyor for a Local Authority and in private industry.

Later Laura changed direction and began to focus on residential property investment support, lettings, maintenance and refurbishments.

Moving into Construction Site Supervision:

Due to her passion for construction and excellent organisational skills Laura looked to move into the area of Construction Site Supervision.

Laura explained “Having had a taster working with a smaller builder in early 2021, I realised site work was where I wanted to be, so I made the leap into this area in November 2021. The apprenticeship opportunity with Taylor Wimpey was perfect timing for me, I was looking for a new challenge and a way to make the most of my interest in construction and project management.”

Building new skills

Created in collaboration with industry experts and leading housebuilders, the Level 4 Construction Site Supervisor (CSS) apprenticeship offers dedicated online learning days that cover a range of modules, including construction technology, health and safety, and communication.

We asked Laura if she would recommend the CSS apprenticeship to others, she said “Yes! I have been able to increase my construction knowledge and expand my project management experience on a much larger scale. It is hard work but there are lots of benefits like working with a great team, learning new skills and attaining qualifications at the same time.”

Looking ahead:

Laura is enjoying her role as an Assistant Site Manager at Taylor Wimpey’s Whittlesey Fields site in the East Midlands. In future she is looking forward to working towards becoming a Site Manager.

Kelly Canfield, Future Talent Development Manager at Taylor Wimpey added “Everyone at Taylor Wimpey wants to congratulate Laura on the hard work and organisation it has taken to complete her apprenticeship and we are delighted with her achievement. It is so important that we can give people with a passion for construction the opportunity to learn new skills to advance their careers and help us continue to deliver high-quality new homes.”
