Qualification overview
Develop and prove you have the skills needed to be a knowledgeable, qualified construction site supervisor for residential development. This NVQ Level 4 qualification includes health and safety, planning, programming, working with others, maintaining good working relationships, customer service and quality control.
You must be working on a construction site or in an office-based role so that we can assess you in your place of work. This course is suitable for trainee/assistant site managers, supervisors and anyone who wishes to progress to these positions.
Who the qualification is aimed at
This work-based qualification is aimed at learners who are working, or want to work, in the construction industry.
It could lead to employment as a supervisor or manager within a chosen specialist technical activity, such as building and civil engineering, highways and maintenance repair or residential development.
Qualification content
Those who take this NVQ Level 4 in Construction Site Supervision must complete six mandatory units from Group A, plus one of the two pathways. They must complete the requirements for the selected pathway, including the mandatory and, where offered, optional units.

- Assessing and recommending work methods for carrying out site operations in the workplace
- Planning activities and resources to meet work requirements in the workplace
- Co-ordinating and organising the control of work in the workplace
- Controlling work progress against agreed programmes in the workplace
- Allocating and monitoring the use of plant, equipment or machinery in the workplace

- Developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships in the workplace
- Maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements in the workplace
- Implementing communication systems for construction projects in the workplace
- Maintaining the dimensional accuracy of work in the workplace
- Controlling work against agreed standards in the workplace
- Contributing to the control of work quantities and costs in the workplace
- Co-ordinating preparation work for site or lifting operations in the workplace
- Allocating work and checking people’s performance in the workplace

You must select two of the following modules:
- Maintaining supplies of materials to meet project requirements in the workplace
- Implementing communication systems for construction projects in the workplace
- Maintaining the dimensional accuracy of work in the workplace
- Controlling work against agreed standards in the workplace
- Providing and monitoring construction-related customer service in the workplace
- Handing over property to recipients following construction or maintenance related activities in the workplace
How long does it take?
Most NVQs take 9-12 months to complete, but it is not uncommon for learners to finish earlier. If it takes more than a year, then there may be a charge for each extra month.
Costs and grants
This NVQ Level 4 costs £2,705 +VAT if completed within 12 months.

Where does it lead?
On completion of this NVQ, you could consider taking a higher qualification such as the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Site Management (Construction) or the NVQ Level 6 in Construction Contracting Operations Management. Your assessor will be delighted to discuss these and any other options with you.
What level is it?
An NVQ Level 4 is equivalent to three A-Levels.
It was great to learn new technical skills and work closely with NHBC. My NHBC assessor was really helpful and could always be reached by phone or email.
