Background:
John has been working in the house-building industry since leaving school. He started as a carpenter working with his father, before moving into site management in 2017. He began the Level 7 NVQ in July 2022.
Why choose an NVQ?
NHBC offers NVQs from Levels 3 to 7 in a range of subjects including construction site management, site inspection and contract operations.
John said “Initially it was daunting but once I talked through the requirements and processes with my tutor, and got my head around the system, I found that I progressed quite quickly. I also appreciated the regular communication and guidance from my tutor. I particularly enjoyed the professional discussions as these cemented my knowledge and gave me confidence by showing me how much I’d learned.”

We asked John about his experience and if he would advise others to join the construction industry. John said “I would definitely recommend an NVQ. I’ve had a great experience and the NHBC tutors are very knowledgeable and supportive.
“I would also absolutely encourage people to join construction and build a career. House building is a great industry to work in as you get to work with a variety of people and every single day is different. If you work hard it’s not just financially rewarding, there are also good opportunities to progress and to develop your skills.”
Looking ahead:
Now John has competed his Level 7 NVQ, the equivalent of a master’s degree, he hopes to progress to a Contracts Manager role in the future.
